Giovina for Rima Fonti / Rugs & Placemats

This is not an argument.

If you're reading this page, you've already ruled out everything sold elsewhere. You know what a square metre of real wool weighs. You recognise fibre by touch. You understood long ago that what's sold by the roll, under fluorescent light, has the depth of a poster.

A hand-woven rug is another matter, and another scale of time. It's made of fibre — agave, wool, cotton, jute, or a blend the atelier keeps to itself. The colour is sewn into the weave, not laid on top. The base is the fibre itself. It breathes under your steps. It comes back to life under the brush. After ten years, you turn it over, and the other side is still intact.

Thirty years. Often more. The word heritage is no longer a catalogue word: it is what happens, materially, when an object holds.

How to choose yours

Four questions, in this order:

1. Where will it go? A barefoot living room calls for wool or the Knitted. A passage corridor calls for the Classico, denser, harder. A bedroom calls for something softer — wool again. A covered terrace or veranda accepts raw agave, which fears humidity less.

2. What size? The rug should always extend beyond the sofa — at least 30 cm on each side. Under a dining table, it must reach past the chairs when pulled out (count 60 cm around the tabletop). Under a bed, it must come out at least 50 cm on each side. When in doubt, bigger beats smaller.

3. What pattern? Plain pieces let themselves be forgotten — they ground the space, they don't claim it. Geometric patterns (Intrecciato, Project Runway) animate a neutral room. Stripes lengthen a corridor. Checkered designs (Bishop, Lina + Oscar) want air around them, not furniture that contradicts them.

4. What colour? Look at your floor. If the wood is warm (golden oak, terracotta), a rug in sands, terracottas, broken whites. If the floor is cold (grey tiles, concrete, stone), blues, greens, ochres. Avoid violent contrast — a rug is not a stain, it's a backdrop.

What you don't have to decide right away

The exact fibre, the shades, the finishes — we choose them together. You tell us where, how much, what pattern draws you, and we send three colour samples laid on the fibre you've chosen. You touch them, you see them in the light of your home. Only then do we start the order.

And if you're buying for someone else — a wedding gift, a friend's home — tell us. We prepare a card that travels before the rug, with a photograph of the loom at work.
