Agrippina Placemat

It is said that Agrippina, the Roman empress, before every meal would personally lay the placemat under her own plate. Even when she dined alone. Even when the plate held nothing but a small bowl of olives before a complicated day. She used to say that a woman seated at a set table is a woman who governs at least something — if only her own attention.

Two thousand years later, Zazie paints a cotton placemat in Rome — geometric motif on front, plain back. She calls it Agrippina because certain habits deserve their names. One at a time, never identical to the previous: no print, only the hand.

Setting the table for yourself is the first gesture of a day that is worth it.
