A placemat is the first thing to touch the plate — and the last to be noticed. But when it is well made, the whole table changes. At Giovina's the placemats are in Furcraea agave fibre, woven by hand, in eight signature patterns that unfold across seventeen variants.
30×40 cm — the format that flatters the plate
The standard measurement of 30×40 cm holds every dinner service — flat plates, soup bowls, serving dishes. The rectangle brings movement to the table, more so than the classic round. Paired beneath a serving dish, or single as an individual placemat.
Eight signature patterns, seventeen variants
Proper in 4 variants (Natural, Copper Border, Brass Border, Antique Pink). San Gil in 7 variants (Natural, Light Blue, Antique Pink, White Bone Brass, and others). Corralito, Adorabold, Staple, Staple Thin, Curitì, Faithful — each in a single variant. Every pattern was born from Giovina's drawing, woven pattern by pattern on the hand loom.
Furcraea Andina — the technical signature
Furcraea agave fibre comes from the Andes. It is rare: no industrially produced placemat uses this fibre. The colour is a warm natural, the texture slightly rough to the touch — perfect to protect the tablecloth from the heat of the plate and, at the same time, to bring visual play to the table.
How to wash them
Dusting or gentle vacuuming. For stains: a damp cloth with cold water. Not machine-washable — the Furcraea fibre is natural and the washing machine will warp it. Cared for, a set lasts 15-20 years.
A gift for weddings and anniversaries
A set of 6, 8 or 12 placemats makes a memorable wedding gift — different from the classic dinner service, lasting decades, communicating care in the choice. Packaged in recycled cardboard, with a note if requested.
How to commission
The 17 models in the catalogue are available — in multiples of 2 (for symmetrical use at the table). Weaving takes 2-4 weeks for a set of up to 12 pieces, 4-6 weeks for larger quantities. Bespoke patterns in dialogue with Giovina on request.
