A rug does not cover the floor. It defines the room. At Giovina's every rug is handwoven on a hand loom, in Furcraea agave fibre — a rare Andean fibre that gives the rug a texture no cotton or wool can match.

Furcraea Andina — the fibre few know

Furcraea is an agave that grows in the Andes. The fibre is drawn from the leaf, sun-dried, spun by hand. The result: a yarn in a warm natural tone, slightly rough to the touch, resistant to time and to wear. It is not sold by the metre, it is not found in European catalogues — it arrives from Giovina's atelier.

Weaving on the hand loom

Giovina works on a hand loom — no machine between the thread and the rug. Every knot, every weft is made by hand. A rug of 200×300 cm takes 6-10 weeks of work. There is no way to hurry it: woven any faster, the fabric will not hold.

Materials paired with Furcraea

Furcraea is the base. On this base Giovina interlaces other matter: wool for softness and warmth, cotton for the more delicate zones of the drawing, copper thread for metallic glints that catch the light. Each rug is a composition — the proportions are decided together.

Dimensions and drawing

Every rug is drawn with you. Typical sizes: 120×180 (small), 170×240 (medium sitting-room), 200×300 (main sitting-room), 240×340 (large room). Bespoke measurements on request. The motif can be geometric, botanical, abstract, or drawn from a fabric you already have at home.

Care of the rug

Gentle vacuuming (soft brush, no rotating head). Rotate every three months for even wear. For stains: cold water and a clean cloth, no aggressive detergents. Professional cleaning every 2-3 years. A well-tended Furcraea rug lasts 30-50 years.

How to commission

A photograph of the room, the desired measurement of the rug, a colour palette, and if you wish a reference motif. Giovina replies within 48 hours with a first graphic proposal. Weaving takes 6-10 weeks depending on the size.
