Two dies, two matters
Antoine's « Metals and ceramics » range consists of two technically distinct tools, designed for materials with opposite hardness. Antoine chooses with you the right tool according to what you intend to mark.
1. Tempered steel punch — for precious metals
To mark silver, gold, brass, the punch must be harder than the metal it imprints. Tempered steel — the choice of the French silversmith tradition since the 18th century — allows a clean imprint, without burr, without tip deformation. The mark certifies the authenticity of the piece, the signature of the artisan.
2. Brass die — for clay, stoneware, unfired ceramic
For soft pre-firing materials, brass is the universal standard of ceramists. Pressed on the still-damp clay, it leaves your motif engraved in recess. Fired with the piece, the mark enters the material forever.
Composition of the two tools
Precious-metals punch : tempered tool steel with controlled tempering, precision-ground tip, turned wooden handle.
Ceramic/clay die : brass (laiton) matrix, standard base 40 × 40 × 10 mm (custom formats on request), 2 mm relief — depth sufficient to maintain legibility even after firing and clay shrinkage. Handle in varnished wood with gold nail at the end to adjust positioning during pressing.
Both tools are engraved with a conical tungsten carbide cutter rotating at 39,500 rpm, precision to 1/100 of a millimetre — the cutter tip is measured under a microscope.
Typical applications
Silversmithing and signature silverware
Silversmith signature, master's punch, internal marks on rings, bracelets, necklaces. Artisan certification in the French tradition since the 18th century.
Ceramists and potters
Mark under the bottom of vases, cups, bowls — imprinted before firing, it remains for the life of the piece.
Brasswork
Identification marks for worked brass pieces : handles, plates, hardware.
Clay, stoneware, terracotta
Studio signatures for stoneware tableware, garden terracotta, rustic pottery, clay sculptures.
